In this book the complete writings of Viktor Car Emin (Kraj 1870 – Opatija 1963) have been analysed from the aspects of the literary history and literary critiques. He was a writer who in Croatian literature lived in the period of national rebirth in Istria and literary writings till the end of the 1950s, publishing 11 novels, around 140 short stories and three dramas.
The introductory three chapters feature the literary-history overview and situation of Viktor Car Emin within the historical context of Istria at the end of the 19th and this first half of the 20th centuries. It also gives an overview of his literary works and the whole of his creative works are divided into three creative periods. In the first creative period (1888-1917) Car discusses the actual problems of Croats in Istria, advocating the preservation of national identity. The second period (1918-1941/45) Car’s literary works were again very fruitful, supporting themes, respectfully continuing on the previous period, and his short stories of mariners’ lives are of outstanding quality, the historical novels and the drama Winter Sun (1903) gained success. The third period (1946 – 1963) is labelled Danuncijada – romansirani kronisterij riječke tragikomedije 1919-1921 and Car’s step out from tradition but also his personal cliché, the part of which was intrinsically different from anything Car had written before. The third chapter gives a view of the literary history and literary critiques of Car’s works. In the remaining parts (chapters 4, 5 and 6) Car’s literary opus is observed through divisions into – short stories, novels and dramas. The shorter stories of prose are grouped into several circular themes, amongst which are the short stories: about the retired mariners, about public teachers and about personalities on society’s margins. Ten of the best short stories from this period are collected in the collection named Starci (1917). In these writings are presented the little people whose lives, society and even historical surroundings are not overlooked. Through a gallery of losers the author creates a picture of the region from Rijeka to Brseč, where they carried out the actions featured in his writings.
The following are analyses published in the trilogy of Istrian novels: Pusto ognjište (1900.), Usahlo vrelo (1903) and Iza plime (1913) amongst which the novel Iza plime stands out by its quality along with the novel Nove borbe (1908/1927/1949). After this is referred to the novels with contemporaneous themes (Naša Mare, 1931, Među dva ognjišta, 1934, Vitez mora, 1939) which are not special by their content nor elaboration of the sources and they did not add any qualitative steps forward. Next follows the historical novels Pod sumnjom (1918) with a theme from the 19th century, Presječeni put (1938) with a theme from the 16th century and Petar Kružić who was the main character and Suor Aurora Veronika (1940) about the period immediately after the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy i.e. the 17th century.
V. Car Emin was the author of three dramas: Zimsko sunce (1903), Mrtva straža / Na straži (1923/1946) and Vicencica (1934) which was the best of his dramas.
Car’s greatest merit was that during his 70 years work he introduced many characters of people from the coastland – Istria and Rijeka into literature and he pointed out the existential problems of this region using a partly realistic approach. The weak parts of his work are the asynchronies – he was often led by romantic literally methods, which is obvious in his phrases, non-inventive language and style which were closer to the 19th than 20th century. We consider him a regional writer and asynchrony writer when compared with dominant literally streams in Croatian literature, but he was not an anachronistic writer.
